The Real Cost of Meat: Spain’s Pig Meat Industry
Animal Equality recently investigated five pig farms in Spain, exposing the pain and suffering endured by millions of pigs every year.
Spain, ranking third in global pig meat production, slaughters over 56 million pigs annually. Evidence from the investigation reveals how many of these animals suffer and die from the harsh conditions before ever making it to slaughter.
Investigators found a disturbing pattern of cruelty and neglect, including wounded animals left without care surrounded by dead rats and maggots. The footage also shows pigs living among the dead bodies of other animals–some were found nibbling at the carcasses. Despite existing laws intended to protect pigs in Spain, inadequate government oversight leads to widespread non-compliance, resulting in 10-15% of pigs dying before reaching the slaughterhouse.

Wounds, infections, animals
living among dead bodies.
This is the reality for over
56 million pigs
raised for their meat in Spain
every year.
This evidence was captured
by Animal Equality's
undercover investigators
inside five pig farms.
The meat industry will not
show you these images.
They will hide the reality
behind humane labels
and stories of happy animals.
But this is what millions
of pigs around the world
go through before they are
killed and served as meat.
Our undercover investigators
documented animals
with lameness, a common
symptom of poor welfare.
This condition
can be caused by workers
performing
painful mutilations, like tail
cutting and castration,
without anesthesia
or by the cramped environment
the animals are forced
to live in.
Many animals are found with
abnormal growths and wounds
all over their bodies,
including in their eyes.
Some have hernias
that prevent them from eating.
Hurt animals are left
without care,
and their wounds become
inflamed and filled with pus.
Dead pigs lie abandoned on
the floor of the farms as live
animals walk among them.
Some even nibble at the bodies
of their dead companions.
Pigs are highly intelligent
and complex beings.
They form bonds with one
another
and experience emotions
like you and me.
They feel joy and excitement,
but also fear and sadness.
But the meat industry
considers their suffering
and death
the price of doing business.
And it spends millions
trying to conceal the truth
behind animal welfare labels.
This violence
and abuse must stop.
We need laws
to protect animals
like pigs, cows, and chickens.
And we need to demand
that existing laws
are enforced
and animal abusers
are brought to justice.
But we should also remember
our power as individuals
to protect animals,
choosing plant-based protein
as the best way
to help animals and spare them
from a life of suffering.
Our food
choices can save lives.
Please choose plant-based alternatives
and protect animals.
Together,
we can make a difference.
Let's stop this cruelty now.
