Terms of Employment: Independent Contractor
Reports to: Executive Director India and General Counsel
Position Location: New Delhi, India
Position Objective:
To assist Animal Equality’s legal advocacy efforts in India by advocating on behalf of farmed animals and ensuring the organization’s legal compliance in all aspects of its operations
General Responsibilities:
- Document all the relevant laws, rules and regulations pertaining to animal welfare, animal agriculture and food safety
- Draft compelling legal proposals requesting the government to introduce or improve animal welfare policies
- File legal complaints based on Animal Equality’s investigations of animal cruelty cases and collaborate with authorities and officials to secure the prosecution of documented crimes
- Assist and coordinate with Animal Equality’s external counsel
- Provide legal support to the investigations and corporate outreach department
- Provide expert and strategic legal advice to the management
- Draft, review, and/or approve all contracts and legal agreements required
- Draft agreements that minimize risks and maximize legal rights
- Meet the legal objectives of Animal Equality
- Deal with complex, significant matters that cut across legal and related areas
- Keep abreast of relevant legislative changes
- Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor
- Required Experience, Skills and Qualifications
- In depth knowledge of the various relevant laws, rules and regulations
- Thorough knowledge of farmed animal issues
- Law degree from accredited college or university
- Minimum of two years of experience in practicing law
- Sophisticated negotiation skills and proven ability to persuade or motivate others
- Ability to conduct media interviews
- Superior written and oral communication skills
- Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines without sacrificing accuracy
- Willingness and ability to travel frequently
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
- Professional appearance and adherence to a vegan lifestyle
