HELP US REDUCE THE SUFFERING OF PIGS

Animal Equality conducted an investigation into pig farms, markets and slaughter of pigs in Maharashtra, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand. It was shocking to see how pigs were hit incessantly, dumped in gunny bags and loaded on bikes and stabbed in the heart several times and in Kerala they were hit by hammer before slaughter. 

We, the undersigned, call upon you to please introduce the recommendations presented to you by Animal Equality, some of which are mentioned below:

  • Form a committee to monitor welfare of aquatic animals in the fishery and aquaculture industry.
  • Mishandling and mistreatment of pigs to be strictly prohibited. 
  • Veterinary care to be made mandatory.
  • Slaughtering of pigs without prior stunning to be strictly prohibited.
  • Slaughtering of pigs in places other than licensed slaughterhouses to be strictly prohibited

INTENSE SUFFERING INFLICTED ON PIGS

Animal Equality conducted an investigation into pig farms, markets and slaughter of pigs in Maharashtra, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand. We investigated 6 farms and 3 slaughter facilities in these states and found blatant illegalities in each case.

It is common to see bruises on pigs.
At farms they are forced to live in filthy conditions.
Their excrement is collected in pools in the vicinity of the farm.
When the pigs are sold for slaughter, they are loaded onto the vehicles by hitting them.
As a standard practice during slaughter, pigs are stabbed in the heart several times, leading to a slow and agonizing death.
As per law, animals are to be slaughtered in licensed slaughterhouses but it was observed that these pigs were slaughtered in meat shops and market areas illegally.
Some meat shops in Kerala practice barbaric ‘hammer slaughter’ where the pig is repeatedly bludgeoned with a hammer on the head till the pig falls unconscious.

In India it is common to see pigs on streets in certain areas of a city or village and one may assume they are stray animals who live their lives and die naturally but these pigs are ultimately slaughtered for meat and this meat is consumed by the poor sections of the society. They are tied by their legs, put in bags and loaded on scooters and rickshaws before they are slaughtered at meat shops or open grounds.
