On the back of one of the salmon packages
we found the code
GBLA017 which stands for Highland
Smoked
Salmon. We asked for an interview and
the opportunity to visit the
farms where they source their products, but
we received no response.
So Cire calls Oban, Scotland's
whisky capital, which overlooks a stretch of
coast where several salmon farms operate,
to try to get closer to a
farm with the help of an
investigator. We do it at sunset
when the workers should have
finished their shifts and aboard a
dinghy with an electric motor so as not to be
heard.
Looking at the sun, it looks like we
still have an hour left. It's 7:20.
Okay, so we have an hour of daylight left. Oh,
look, there's a seal. How many salmon
are farmed here? There
are seven tanks on this farm
. Each tank can hold up
to 100,000 salmon. The largest farms
reach one million
salmon. Scottish salmon is seen
as a premium product.
Yes, yes. Many people don't
even realize that it is bred. They think it's
wild, a fish swimming
in the ocean. After a 20-minute
ride on the dinghy, we approach
the
salmon pool. We climb into the basin and
the investigator immediately spots the
first sick salmon. This one has its tail
eaten. It's right
here. Giovanni, are you there? See the
white part? Ah!
Oh yeah, that's because he's missing a
piece of his tail.

And the detective also sees another
salmon. Yes, right here. There's one whose
eyes are popped out. You see? You can
see the fins there.
Can you see the eyes?
And thanks to his underwater camera
we can see the salmon up close
with pop-eyed eyes, that is, their eyes
protrude excessively. It is a
pathology that can occur due to a
bacterial infection or problems
related to water quality.
This farm has the RSPCA seal,
which is the certificate that guarantees a
higher standard of
animal welfare. The certificate requires that
the fish be inspected twice a day
and that any dying fish be collected.
But the investigator, a few hours before
our arrival, flew the
drone right over the farm and
found dying salmon like
this one crashing into the
walls and like this other one, now
practically dead, and also the one with
its tail cut off and the salmon with its
eyes popped out.
In another tank you can see this salmon lying belly
up, but with its gills
still moving. Sick fish should be
collected when they are at the
surface, that is, when they are dying,
but these are requirements that only apply on
paper.

There are also dead salmon in the ponds
and these too, according to the
certifications, should be collected.
A few hours before our arrival,
the investigator filmed the workers
collecting dead fish
from one of the tanks on the farm
we visited. A
sick salmon is also caught and killed with
sticks. But among those collected there is
also a live salmon that remains
dying among the dead ones for several

minutes. Inspections that are carried out
are always announced in advance. There
are never any surprise visits. Our
investigators were there filming and
we could see how a few hours
before the parliamentarians arrived,
huge containers full
of dead fish
[Music] were collected

Workers are seen collecting tons of
dead salmon and once the tanks are cleaned,
Scottish MPs arrive
in what was billed as a
fact-finding visit.

Millions of salmon die in
farms every year, mainly due
to warming waters,
climate change,
disease, sea lice infestations,
and it is sea lice that
threaten
salmon farms. As you can
see from the images collected by Bolish
Summon Farming, some farms have
a real infestation of
lice. Lice feed on the
skin, tissue, and blood of
salmon, causing lesions and
infections. In the most serious cases they can
lead to death.
These pests couldn't
ask for a better place. They have a
million potential hosts all
confined to one place. When
you eat salmon, you are not the first to
do so. The lice have already eaten it
before you.
With Andrew Graham, president of
Wildfish, we go to the
UK's leading supermarket chain
to see the salmon on sale and
make a bitter discovery. Do
you see these signs? That's where the
sea lice were. Sea lice actually
ate away the skin of the
salmon. A large salmon like this
can survive a large number of
lice. But a young
wild salmon, if attacked by more than
10 sea lice, will die. they are
flayed alive.
Also due to sea lice,
mortality in salmon farms
has reached record highs.
If 10 years ago
7% of salmon died before reaching the slaughterhouse,
today the mortality rate has risen to
25%, meaning 17 million salmon die
in farms every year. So, after
the investigation in which we saw the
state in which salmon are farmed,
we recorded on the one hand the
silence of the animal rights activist
Brambilla and on the sustainability of
salmon farming on the other.
Instead, the investigators who were in
contact with our Giulia Innocenzi
went to see the state of the
other Scottish
[Musica] farms
. A week after
our visit, Animal Quality drones
returned to film the conditions of the
salmon farm on the coast
of Oban. And this time too there are
dying salmon swimming on the
surface with their eyes popped out.

To meet animal welfare standards
, salmon in these conditions
must be collected and slaughtered to
end their suffering. The workers
collect them with a net and kill them with
[Music]
beatings. But in this case the salmon did
not die instantly and the worker had to
give it another beating.

Numerous dead salmon are collected
with
nets. There are several still alive
who will remain in agony for several
minutes without anyone intervening to
put them down, as required by the
regulations. And a worker was
even caught urinating right on top of one of the
salmon ponds. These images, along with
others collected at a farm
in Shuna Point, also on the
northern coast of Scotland, where
other dying fish have been recorded after being
critically killed, are
part of a complaint to the
Animal Welfare Agency about
potential mistreatment on
these
salmon farms. Peeing in
salmon farming is something we were missing, but
our Giulia Innocenzi's extraordinary investigation
has had an effect
.
The English body that issues
the certifications has issued the
RSPCA certification and has informed us that
following our images, one of the two
farms has been suspended and will no longer be able to
sell salmon with the
guarantee label. The other farm is
under investigation. This is because they do not
meet minimum standards for
animal welfare. Well, what

highest standards of animal welfare,
