Pigs foaming at the mouth,
skin splitting open on metal bars,
dead piglets rotting at their mother's feet.
Across the US millions of pregnant pigs are locked in.
Cages so small they can't turn around.
Not for minutes, not for hours.
For months, animal equality investigators went undercover
to expose this farming practice.
This Kansas pig farm is tied
to brands you've seen in your grocery store.
Over a thousand mother pigs live in a single barn
lined up side by side.
They spend their entire lives standing up, lying down,
and chewing the bars from extreme stress.
Each pregnancy lasts nearly four months.
She can't turn, can't stretch, can't move more than a step.
Weeks after giving birth, she's sent back to the cage.
The cycle continues causing many
to suffer from birth related injuries.
When her tired body no longer produces enough piglets
for the industry to profit from,
she slaughtered, her body grows.
The crate doesn't. The metal cuts into her
skin and causes sores.
She risks infection as she lies on feces. Covered floors.
Many don't fit within the bars,
so they wedge their heads under the cage doors.
There is nothing to do, nothing to occupy her mind.
Many stare at the walls for weeks. Some climb.
The bars agitated as they desperately paw the air.
Others give birth early, locked in their crates.
They can't turn to see their premature piglets
who often die on the cold concrete.
Within an hour, mother pigs are left
to die from injury and illness too.
This injured pig was shot, left to bleed in a pen.
The others could not look away.
Here, another nudges and sniffs a dead pig.
Some give up, but all end up in corporate supply chains.
A whole Del Haze. The parent company of Stop and Shop Giant
and Food Lion is linked to this cruelty.
Over a decade ago, they pledged
to stop confining pigs in cruel cages.
That promise has been delayed again by three more years.
